Quick answer
Print the chart and write P, O or X in the right day and hour every time something happens. After three or four days, look for the hours that repeat: those are your puppy’s usual potty times, and the gaps before each X are the ones that were too long.
Writing every break down is the quickest way to learn your puppy’s pattern. Print this chart, stick it on the fridge, and fill in a letter each time. After a few days, the times she really goes jump out of the page.

Rule of thumb: a puppy can hold it for about her age in months plus one, in hours, at most. Always go out after waking, eating, drinking and play.
How to read your chart
- Look for repeats. The same hour marked three days running is a usual potty time. Go out a few minutes before it.
- Check the gap after M and N. How long after a meal or a nap does the next P appear? That is her personal trigger time.
- Circle the X marks. Accidents usually cluster around a missed trigger or a gap that was too long.
Not sure what to expect at her age? Start from the puppy potty schedule by age, then let the chart tell you where she differs.
Questions people ask
How do I use a puppy potty chart?
Write a letter in the right day and hour every time something happens: P for a pee outside, O for a poo outside, X for an accident indoors, M for a meal and N for a nap. After three or four days, look down each column for the times that repeat.
How long should I keep a potty log?
Three or four days is usually enough to see your puppy’s pattern. Keep going for a couple of weeks and you will see it shift as she grows and can hold it longer.
Is there a potty tracker app instead of a printable?
Yes. An app logs each break in one tap, counts the gaps for you, and works out the pattern automatically, which is hard to do reliably on paper.
